One of the first activities on their intinerary was the visit to Historic Center of Mérida, where they visited The Cathedral of San Idelfonso, one of the oldest in Latin America. They also explored the Goverment Palace, famous for its Murals that narrate the history of the region. The Paseo de Montejo, with its colonial mansions and in the same way learn a little more about the gastronomy by trying different Yucatecan desserts, the marquesitas being the favorites.
Throughout the month, WIU was carrying out its recreational activities and taking classes at Habla Language Center, together with teachers and other students. Among these activities: the jicaras workshop, the salsa class and the maiz workshop. Other activities like biciruta, Mérida en domingo and the Vaqueria were also included.
Likewise, excursions to the most famous areas of the Peninsula. Here, the students learned up close the customs and traditions that are still preserved. They learned about the importance of preserving natural areas such as cenotes, the archaeological zone of Uxmal, Ek Balam and even Puerto Morelos, located in Quintana Roo. This experience was especially enriching, since it allowed them to understand and value the cultural heritage of the native peoples of the region.
Definitely, WIU students had a very pleasant experience in Mérida through historial exploration, gastronomy, interaction with local communities, outdoor activities and participation in cultural events. They not only acquired knowledge, but also new friendships and memories that will stay forever.
