This past Saturday and Sunday the group of students from Centre College had the opportunity to go on an excursion to see Chichén Itzá and then a Mayan Village named Yaxunah.

While at Chichén Itzá the students saw the ancient Mayan archeological sites that are there. These sites include El Castillo, The Great Ball court, and an observatory. The students walked around to each of these sites throughout the day on Saturday and learned about the ancient Mayan history at these great sites.

The students then traveled to Yaxunah, a small Mayan village about an hour away from Chichén Itzá. Here the students swam in the Cenote Lol-Ha, met many people that live in the town, enjoyed food cooked by the people, and ventured to another smaller archeological site located near the town.

Saturday night the students stayed with families in Yaxunah and the next morning had the chance to help cook a traditional Mayan meal called Cochinita Pibil. This weekend was a unique opportunity for the students to learn about ancient Mayan history as well as the culture that is here in México.
